Fantastically February February 28th, 2024 Keeping up with Jake in Feburary I spent 12 hours at Wellington Accident & Emergency recently. Don’t worry. I’m fine. My son is fine. We just timed the need to see a doctor for midnight Friday, and we paid the price. After seeing the triage nurse we were clearly put in the low risk category, waiting 8 hours before my son’s name got called. I wish I could say that an idea for a play came to me, or that the hours I’ve put into playing doctors in just about every TV role I’ve ever been given meant I was useful, but, sadly, neither was the case. I was, however, struck by how undiscerning accidents and emergencies are. The people in the waiting room were a cross section of society from the well-heeled-lung-issue-woman to the shirtless-drunk-screaming-dislocated-finger-guy. But no matter what the disorder, the doctors and nurses, many from my part of India (you’re welcome!), dealt with us all with skill, competence and grace. By the time my son was discharged we both agreed the health system may have its detractors but the team on our shift were golden. We’d highly recommend them, just don’t leave it till Friday night.
