Welcome back! January 20th, 2022 Keeping up with Jake in January Indian Ink created its first play 25 years ago and this year, we’ll be launching our 11th. You know what’s funny? Back then masks were our thing! Anyway, a couple of weeks ago Justin and I spent 3 days in Wellington (thanks for the space to dream Te Whaea) outlining the bones of a story. As I type this it’s day 4 of a 5-day workshop working with actors to test that outline (thanks for the space to scream Westpoint Performing Arts Centre). Trestle tables are strewn with ring binders and manila folders, there are piles of fluorescent post-it notes, a stapler and a hole punch, highlighters and biros, a white board and a cleaner’s cart; all the detritus of a week spent playing at being in an office – the setting of our new show. I can’t help but smile: 4 actors, a director and a dramaturg working really hard at pretending to have a real job. Loads of belly laughs, shrieks of delight and gasps – the bones are good; really good. Tomorrow there’ll be a Show ‘n Tell for the rest of the creative team. Who knew these moments in a room together would be so precious. 25 years ago, the masks were on me, tomorrow they’ll be on the audience. Talk about “Keeping up with Jake”! I’ll tell you one thing about running a theatre company – it’s never another day at the office. Life’s full of plot twists – don’t miss ours!
