Testing times… Let’s get this show on the road! February 28th, 2022 Keeping up with Jake in February So hands up if you’ve had a Covid test yet. I had my first one this month and I LOVED it! I know what you’re thinking: “Weirdo.” But let me clarify. The test itself wasn’t loveable but what made my day were the nurses. Before you say “Weirdo” again, let me paint the scene. I’m at the testing place filling in the paperwork and Nurse Nightingale (not her real name) approaches me and says: “Sorry to intrude but I just want to say I absolutely loved Paradise or the Impermanence of Ice Cream. I saw it at Te Auaha last year and it stayed with me for weeks. I read up on vultures afterwards and I thought the whole show was just brilliant.’ I thanked Nightingale, handed in my paperwork and then was greeted by Nurse Florence (her real name!) who was also an Indian Ink fan and enthusiastically gushed about Mrs Krishnan’s Party. By this stage I didn’t care what was being put up my nose – I didn’t want to leave the place! My only regret was that because of the PPE gear I never got to see their faces. It occurred to me that the play we’re writing at the moment is, in part, a tribute to all those unseen workers who aren’t rewarded or thanked enough. So let me say, thank you Florence and Nightingale. Thanks to you my time at the testing center was entirely positive – apart from the test result. Phew! Life’s full of plot twists – don’t miss ours!
