Astonishing August August 30th, 2024 Keeping up with Jake in August I was last here at the Darwin International Arts Festival in 2019. That was with Guru of Chai. This time it’s with the sequel, Paradise or the Impermanence of Ice Cream. The poster for Paradise features my character, Kutisar, holding up a melting ice cream cone. You couldn’t ask for a more relatable image in this town where day time temperatures hover at around 34℃ before “plummeting” to 24℃ at night. The schedule is intense. We’re cramming in six shows and a mask workshop within four days. It’s a good thing that Justin, Murray (dramaturge) and I spent the week before this crazy season polishing the script. We knocked 10 minutes off the running time which doesn’t sound like much, but when your costume is soaked in sweat after sixty seconds on stage, any minute saved is worth its weight in ice cream. The fully-heat-tested and Darwinian-evolved Paradise gets its next airing in Christchurch in September. And don’t worry – the costume will have been well aired prior. Life’s full of plot twists – don’t miss ours! Join our mailing list and you’ll get sneak peeks at new shows, ticket deals, and stories that might just change the way you see the world.
