In Memory

Man and elderly woman wearing glasses, smiling together; she wears a pearl necklace and an orange shawl.

In the dedication of Indian Ink’s first published play I wrote: “Krishnan’s Dairy is dedicated to Susheela Rajan, sari procurer, set storer, caterer, language coach and Jacob’s Mum.”

Mum passed away a few weeks ago. She was going to turn 90 next month. Her church was packed to overflowing for the funeral. A fitting celebration of a beautiful life well lived. I want to share something from my eulogy:

“In 2023, I moved my office into Dad’s old study so I could keep an eye on Mum. I’d park the car in her garage, come up the stairs, she’d give me a hug, then put on her apron and start chopping onions, ginger and garlic. She loved to feed, she loved to nurture, she loved to nourish. And I loved lunch…

The thing that Mum taught me, not through her words, but her actions is that you don’t have to invent penicillin or have your name up in lights to make an impact on the world. You can do it through goodness. And Mum was so good. Just look around and see the amount of people she’s affected. If her sons take a fraction of that goodness into the world then she’s done her job. She’s earned her rest.”

Love you, Mum. Miss you. Lunch will never be the same.
