A marvellous May May 30th, 2023 Keeping up with Jake in May For the past two weeks I’ve been in a room witnessing the miracle of rehearsal. The actors breathing life into the words, problems encountered and collectively solved, imaginative leaps, hilarious flops and breathtaking moments of beauty. It’s one of my favourite parts of theatre making. We open in a few short weeks and the audience will witness the visible work but here, in a freezing barn of a building in Westmere, the invisible work is being done. You may think we gave birth to this show last year with the development season and in a way, that’s true, but let me milk/breastfeed this metaphor for all it’s worth. You see, what people saw back then was a newborn. A bundle of joy, to be sure, but still operating largely on instinct and reflex. Since that time, we’ve fed, nurtured, consulted regularly with the Plunket nurse (named Murray), had many sleepless nights and changed a lot of nappies. We’re proud parents and now, nearly a year later, our gorgeous baby is going to come running and giggling towards you, arms open, curious, playful and miraculous. P.S. Advice to new parents: Have a different 20-strong choir you’ve never met sing to your baby every night – they’ll love it! Life’s full of plot twists – don’t miss ours!
