A juicy, jam-packed July!

Keeping up with Jake in July

Remember how last month we did two workshops for Dirty Work, our latest play?Bald man in plaid shirt placing handwritten sticky notes on large wall-mounted paper during a planning/brainstorming session.

And remember how I said Mrs Krishnan’s Party would be performed at the prestigious BroadStage in Santa Monica this month?

Well those two separate Inksplosions of creativity have led to a weird breach in the time-space continuum. Let me explain.

I’m currently taking all the discoveries we made in the Dirty Work workshops and writing a second draft of the script.

Meanwhile, Justin is over in L.A. with Mrs Krishnan’s Party directing the production and meeting anybody our U.S. agent, David Lieberman, urges him to meet – schmoozing and hustling. At the end of each day I send Justin the pages I’ve written. If I send them at 5pm on a Tuesday in Wellington, they arrive at 10pm on Monday in California – 19 hours before I’ve written them 🤯!

Justin reads my genius/garbage, wipes his tears/grits his teeth and then sends me congratulatory/soul destroying notes which I implement and we start the whole process all over again.

Fortunately, our dramaturge, Murray Edmond, is the Stephen Hawking of playwrighting and his notes tend to stitch the fabric of space and time back together again. All in all, the whole process is like one of the least interesting episodes of Dr Who you could imagine.

However, I estimate that in two weeks we will have given birth to a beautiful, bouncing, baby rehearsal script. Weird to think that when the curtain comes down on Krishnan’s Dairy in Wellington at the end of its remarkable 25 year run, just two days later the curtain will rise on Dirty Work with its development season in Auckland.

Reminds me of a time travelling joke I heard tomorrow.
