A Postcard from Hawaii March 30th, 2022 Keeping up with Jake in March “The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.” – Philip Henslowe That’s got to be one of my favourite lines about the theatre. It’s from the Oscar winning screenplay, Shakespeare in Love, by Tom Stoppard & Marc Norman. The film is set in the 16th century when theatres were beginning to reopen after the Plague. Sound familiar? I’m here in Hawaii and last night I performed the American premiere of Paradise or the Impermanence of Ice Cream and those words have never rung truer. The VISA process, the vaccine certification, the pre-departure Covid test, the transit Covid test, the arrival Covid test, the same day pack in and pack out. That I got to perform was a miracle. But that’s the thing, you see? Theatre at its very core is miraculous. All those strangers in a room together being transformed by a story. It happened last night, they stood at the end and all that struggle to get here evaporated and we were just left with the miracle. I’ve been privileged to witness that miracle (as well as the insurmountable obstacles and imminent disasters) for 25 years with Indian Ink. Now, more than ever, the opportunity to perform is precious and we’re taking every chance we get this anniversary year to celebrate. I hope you’ll brave the obstacles to join us. Mahalo.
