A month of MAYhem May 30th, 2022 Keeping up with Jake in May The other day I found an old concertina file while clearing out my bedroom cupboard. It was full of bits and pieces going back 25 years. Decades old flyers and program notes, yellowing scripts, news clippings, a quote for printing posters dated July 1997 that still seemed quite expensive and then this: To Whom it May Concern, In my three-and-one-half years with Toi Whakaari I have witnessed no finer piece of self-devised theatre than Jacob Rajan’s monologue Krishnan’s Dairy… In assessing Dairy after its first public performance in 1994, I wrote the following: ‘Every now and again an actor does something so special that my pride in being a professional is restored; my faith in the craft renewed.’ I can unhesitatingly reiterate that assessment of Krishnan’s Dairy to you today. Yours faithfully, K.C. Kelly I’m indebted to all my wonderful tutors at Toi for their wisdom and guidance but K.C. Kelly was the crazy American guru that oversaw the solo shows in my final year. After graduation I must’ve asked him for a reference for my funding application. Boy, did he deliver! So, you know how you’ve put off clearing out that cupboard for far too long? Well, take it from me, it’s worth the effort. Occasionally you stumble on something so precious it makes you weep. Life’s full of plot twists – don’t miss ours!
