November update to fascinate and celebrate

Keeping up with Jake in NovemberMan in profile staring at a round lamp, his face illuminated against a black background.

Ever wondered where the idea for a new play comes from? I’m wondering that now. Clearly, they don’t grow on trees; the ripest ones, heavy with promise, and hanging low for the plucking.

No, sadly, it feels more like I’m scratching in the dirt, scavenging for seeds… or worms, or buttons – anything really. The great thing is, at this stage, the ideas don’t have to be ‘good’, you just have to look for them. The more you have, the less you have to worry about good or bad. They’re just a place to start. A fragment, a sentence, a question or a button.

Ideas are not finished products. They’re not the play, they’re something to play with. Curiosities to wonder about; itches to scratch.

And yet, somehow, in the space of a year or two, one of these curious itches will be deeply researched; undergo testing in laboratories/workshops, be scrutinised by our resident dermatologist/dramaturg Murray, it’ll be picked at and then left alone and picked at again. And in a year or two from now, I’ll be waiting in the wings of a theatre somewhere, itching to go on, to share a brand new play with you. How does that happen?

Right now, I literally have no idea.
