A joyous July July 30th, 2023 Keeping up with Jake in July Last month I was banging on about the stress of watching opening night of Dirty Work. It’s a little bit like being a caged monkey watching his fellow monkeys climb a tree. Well, last month the monkey escaped and swung through a couple of branches of Melbourne – Frankston and Narre Warren. Paradise or the Impermanence of Ice Cream: two centres, two performances. More a guerrilla raid than a tour. You feel like you spend more time driving than in the theatre but there’s also a wonderful feeling, as with any good guerrilla raid, that you’ve genuinely taken people by surprise. Nobody knows who we are in Australia (yet). We turn up at these far flung places, set up our little stage and set the monkey free. For 90 minutes it’s the audience who are held captive – in a good way. Vultures, Mumbai, ice cream, death. They had no idea what they were signing up for and they loved it. But before they can say: “Who was that masked man?” – we’re gone. Gorillas in the mist. By the time you read this there’ll only be two stops left on the Dirty Work tour. Wellington and Tauranga. 25 monkeys on stage – you’d be bananas to miss it. Life’s full of plot twists – don’t miss ours!
