I genuinely expected this play to be about a pickle merchant and his endeavours with romance. But it turned out to be more than just that.  The Pickle King lifted the lid on this jar, releasing notes of well-timed humour, romance that tugs at your heart strings and an ever present aroma of death.

Presented by Indian Ink and directed by Jacob Rajan and Justin Lewis, the play has won multiple notable awards. Returning with its focus on a same gendered couple. The play is centred around an unlucky in love Sasha. Who is played by the talented actress Kalyani Najarajan. She just begins to find hope in an unlikely character after her husband’s death. Sasha and her new found love barely get a chance to explore their feelings before they are interrupted by the highly suspicious Pickle King. He affirms her superstitious thoughts of losing everyone she loves. Forcing her away from her beloved porter, Jeena,  played by the multi faceted actress, Vanessa Kumar. Who also plays the classic Indian auntie in the play.

But true love is unavoidable. So the case remains, who will be the first to go.

The beautiful hand painted set transports you between The Empire’s lobby and rooms. The grand piano creatively unfolds into a cupboard during the play. During the entire play, there is live music provided by Aryton Foote, whose charismatic notes and unspoken expressions add an extra layer of enchantment to the play.

The play mingles themes such as immigration, marriage, love and loss with plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour.  It is whimsical, honest and a must see event. Indian Ink is in Auckland until the 19th of August at Q Theatre and will be making their way down to Wellington from the 24th of August to the 9th of September.
